OK, this one is epic. Twenty-four Russian motorcyclists ride a 14-day, 4,000 km loop through the Ural Mountains. 1,400 kms of the trip are off-road. Half the time there aren’t any roads at all. And the other half, they’re nothing but mud holes. Lots of river crossings, lots of open country. Lots of crashes, lots of teamwork. It looks like it was quite an adventure. Cue Russian folk music!

Australian off-road motorcycle racer Chris Hollis enjoys a relaxing day at home in New South Wales, piloting his KTM around the back forty. Pay close attention at 0:36. That’s a nice move.

I like seeing a guy ride with this much speed and skill. Well done. And well shot by Shane Fletcher. The music is M83, “We Own the Sky.”

The 46th running of the Baja 1000 starts tonight in Ensenada, Mexico, and winds along an 833-mile course to finish back in Ensenada on the 17th. Here’s a video with a little bit of history about the race, including—I just learned—the traps and obstacles set by the spectators.

You can also follow along at the SCORE site. They also have a live map where you track the progress of the almost 40 different vehicle classes.

Have a look at the rest of the post for a pretty cool GoPro view of last year’s race from onboard Bryce Menzies trophy truck.  Read the rest of this entry »

I found this great video on Expo the other day. In 1995 Austin Vince and seven friends went traveling around the world on motorcycles along the longest route possible. They started in their home country of England and covered about 40,000 miles visiting 44 countries. Great stuff.

The guys at Touratech compare the KTM 990 to the the new KTM 1150. They do a good job of comparing the two bikes and the off-road footage is excellent.

Being at sea doesn’t mean you have to give up on off-road fun. This boat we spotted in Friday Harbor had their knobby-tired scooter strapped to their stern.

Of course there are other ship-to-shore options. A boat we spotted in Roche Harbor brought along its own helicopter.

I spotted this Kawasaki KLR 650 in Roche Harbor, Washington, yesterday.

Earlier this year I posted about what great value this bike is for your adventure dollar. This one looks nicely equipped fairing, tank bag, and a pelican case. It’s nice to see these bikes out in the wild getting ridden.

The other day I posted about the Africa Twin and its 25-year history. Today I have some vintage video for you of both the 650 and 750 versions of the bike in its glory days.

The first two videos are in French but the appeal is universal. Same goes for the last one of a Africa Twin 750 starting up. Read the rest of this entry »

Titus Canyon, all photos: Gus M.

Bay Area WCXC reader Gus M. sent in these excellent photos of a ride he, his wife, and some friends took to through Furnace Creek in Death Valley. He reports that there’s a little more going on than in nearby Stovepipe Wells, including few restaurant options, gas station, post office and even a swimming pool and cell service.

See the rest of the photos, and an area map, after the link. Thanks, Gus! Read the rest of this entry »
