1995 Range RoverClassic LWB, via WCXC

I just spotted this 1995 Range Rover Classic LWB for sale on Bring a Trailer. It is said to have been meticulously maintained by a collector-owner and the photos certainly bear that out. You just can’t beat the design of the the Classics. They just look so right, even after twenty years, especially in this color combo of Plymouth Blue paint over tan hides. Power is provided by a 4.2-liter V-8.

Of course, their legendary good looks and off-road prowess are only matched by their legendary need for maintenance. As one commenter on Bring a Trailer put it, “For anyone considering buying this vehicle let me offer you this option. Gather up all of the money you were going to spend (cash only, no checks) and pay me a visit in person. We will split the money 50/50. I will kick you in the crotch as hard as humanly possible and you will go back home both mentally and financially better off.”

Ouch… Still—she’s a beauty, isn’t she? Here are the rest of the details, in case you can’t resist.

The air suspension has been replaced with coil springs and Bilstein shocks. Mileage is 107,000. The truck is available in Woodland Hills, California. Bidding currently stands at $15,200 with no reserve and about 13.5 hours on the ebay auction clock at the time of writing.

Many more photos and the original ad text after the jump.

Update 02/05/2015: Well, that ended quickly. The ebay ad says the item was pulled because it was no longer available. Surely it was picked up by someone with impeccable taste, balls of steel, and a wallet to match.

Land Rover Series 3, West County Explorers Club

This fully restored 1984 Land Rover Series III 109 wagon was listed on ebay this summer. I haven’t seen that many long-wheelbase two-doors. The truck looks stunning in grey with cream steel wheels.

Here’s what the ad had to say:

During the process of the restoration the car was fully dismantled and all automobile components, frame, engine, transmission, body details, wiring, brake system and cooling system has been checked and rebuilt.

All components have been cleaned from dust, rust and the old layer of color. After cleaning the metal components were galvanized, covered with powder color or colored. All aluminum body panels were cleared from old color and covered with qualitative primer, which shields it from oxidation.

The floor, the roof, the engine cover and the doors have been lined with sound-proof panels. Individual roof side and floor lining has been set up.

Regulation of valves, carburetor, wheel alignment, brakes, manual brakes and front lamps, as well as tire balancing has been carried out.

A 500km long test ride has been made with the automobile, after the test ride, a technical test has been carried out and regulation was checked no defects were found.

The automobile is in excellent technical and visual condition, it is ready to participate in road traffic or increase a collection.

The asking price was $49,000 and the truck was located in Latvia, in eastern Europe.

Unimog U1300L • WCXC

Here’s a Unimog mash-up from ebay (via Bring a Trailer). The truck is described as a U1300L with a U1500 sourced 5.7-liter, turbo-charged, six-cylinder diesel. The ad states 72,302 for the the odometer reading.

If you go for this check it out well, given engine swap. The buy-it-now price is $28,500 and there are just about 3 days left on the ebay clock. The truck is located in Colorado.

Milspec Mercedes / Puch GE230 • WCXC

This matte-black, milspec G-wagen, a 1990 Mercedes-Benz/Puch 230GE, is the the upmarket G500’s bare-bones, older cousin. While locking front, rear, and center differentials, and legendary off-road capabilities, are baked into the G-wagen DNA, you’ll have do without the brawny V8, and front-and-rear heated, leather seats in this version.

Power, in this case, comes from a 2.3-liter, 4-cylinder, gasoline engine good for 125 hp and 141 lb-ft of torque. Whether that’s enough to motivate a long wheelbase (LWB) G-wagen, you’ll have to determine with a test drive. Out back it’s configured as a soft-top with seating for six, most likely via two, long, folding, bench seats (in addition to the two seats in the front, of course). The transmission is a 4-speed manual.

Mileage is listed as 69,300 km, but, if the odometer has only five digits, look carefully around the truck for wear to make sure the odo. hasn’t been rolled over. One good place to check are the rubber pads on the foot pedals. On a high-mileage car, they’ll be quite worn. Also make sure the odometer is running consistently and doesn’t cut out after five miles or so.

It’s listed at CN$26,500, which is a significantly higher price than I’ve seen elsewhere online (check the links below). If it’s a nice example though, you’ll surely be able to negotiate.

The truck is located in Vancouver, Canada, and is one year away from legal import status to the US (the 25-year rule).

Special thanks to WCXC reader Clay R. for spotting this one for us.

Here’s an interesting find: a right-hand drive, short wheel base, 70-series, diesel Land Cruiser. Specifically, this is a 1988 BJ74 LX with a 3.4-liter, 13B-T (T for turbo) diesel engine and an automatic transmission. The 13B-T is good for 120 hp and 159 lb-ft of torque. Other highlights include a removable fiberglass top, a factory PTO winch, and a hand throttle (handy for operating the PTO).

This truck also sports a Safari Snorkel and a K&N filter. If you’re interested, double check that pairing. As far as I know, it’s one that Safari doesn’t recommend. The suspension is said to be an Old Man Emu system with a bit of lift. The BJ series was never sold new in North America, making this a relatively rare find, especially with the factory PTO setup.

While this Land Cruiser doesn’t look pristine — and the chrome bull bar is bit much for my taste — it does look presentable and clean underneath. The truck is located in Seattle, Washington, and is said to have 178k miles on the clock. $13,750 is the asking price. See the links for the original ad and some research reading.

Special thanks to our friend Josh in Portland for spotting this one.

Here’s a nice looking 1975 Pinzgauer 710M and trailer for sale on Craigslist. This is a soft-top version with a 2.7-liter engine built by Goatwerks. As far as I know the 2.7-liter was only ever offered on the 712 series (6×6) trucks, so this sounds like an aftermarket swap. The truck can reportedly run all day at 65mph due to the upgraded engine.

Other extra items include a Pertronix ignition, an auxiliary diesel heater, 24v air conditioning, a set of tire chains, and a trailer. The truck has also been Rhinolined, which is said to cut down on noise.

In the service department, the ad reports recent carburetor and valve adjustments, new shocks, and plenty of tread left on the BFG tires.

Overall this sounds like a nice, stock looking truck, with some solid upgrades. The ad includes plenty of extra information.

This Pinzgauer 710M is available in Reno, Nevada with a $16,000 asking price.

If you’re in the market for an amphibious, 6×6 off-roader, have a look at this mid-60s Alvis Stalwart. It features a 220-hp straight-eight Rolls-Royce engine, a 25,000-lb. winch, and a 12,000-lb. boom in the bed.

A few caveats before you grab your checkbook: The only way to get into this thing is through the hatches on the roof. It’s lack of a center differential means you can’t drive it on the road without destroying the transmission. And, of course, it’s British, so watch the electrics.

Another note of caution: some of these trucks had all of their swim gear removed in the 80s, while still in military service. Finding parts to rebuild those systems… let’s just say that Alvis never had much of a US dealer network.

That said, if you want a truly go-anywhere vehicle, and have the technical and financial resources to keep this 50-year-old beast running, it could be the vehicle for you.

This Alvis Stalwart is located in Puyallup, Washington, near Seattle, with an $8500 asking price.

I’ve always liked the 80s-era Audi 4000. To my eye they look better than the 5000, cleaner, more compact.

Here’s an 1985 Audi 4000S (spotted on Bring a Trailer) with only 112k miles, a 5-speed gearbox, a sun roof, and, of course, Quattro all-wheel drive. This model was equipped with an inline, 5-cylinder engine rated at a modest 115 hp and 126 ft. lbs of torque. That’s good for a 9.5-second 0–60 time. People say they’re quiet fun to drive though.

This car is reportedly owned by a German-car-repair-shop owner in Denver and is said to have been completely mechanically sorted out.

A note on this model’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system: all four wheels are permanently engaged through three open differentials. The center and rear diffs. are lockable via levers on the dashboard.

Bidding currently stands at $7,500 with 24 bids and three days left on the clock.

Update 12/18/2013:
Bidding on this Audi just ended at $12,655 with 36 bids.

filson-aev-brute-xl

We’ve been remiss in our scarce coverage of AEV trucks. If you haven’t already heard, AEV takes the stock Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, stretches the frame by 39″, reinforces it, adds a 61″ composite pick-up bed, and then makes almost everything else better, stronger, or faster. There’s a tuned, remote-reservoir suspension with 4.5 inches of lift, an optional 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 with 470 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque, custom bumpers, a custom hood. The list goes on. The result is called the AEV Brute Double Cab. By all accounts the ride, performance, and capability are amazing.

This particular truck is a recently-released Filson special edition. That adds about $10k to the top-of-the-line Brute’s $120k price tag. In exchange you get a custom Filson leather and cloth interior and special exterior paint but end up with only one seat in the back of the cab. Is it worth the bargain? You decide.

Either way it’s great to see trucks of this quality being produced State-side.

There’s a great overview video of the AEV Brute below and more photos of the Filson Edition Brute at the end of the post.

This nice looking 1975 Volvo TGB 11 is currently being offered for sale on Unimog Exchange. If you’re familiar with these trucks, you know that the Volvo TGBs, which come in 4×4 and 6×6 versions, are the military cousins of the civilian Volvo C303. They’re extremely capable trucks thanks to such off-road luxuries as locking front and rear differentials and portal axles.

This particular truck is said to have a custom bumper with winch, HID headlights, and IFR driving lights. The interior is said to have new upholstery and trim, and Dynamat sound insulation. Under the hood the seller calls out a Pertronix Flame Thrower coil, and 24 and 12 volt electrical systems. The truck is said to be fully galvanized with no rust issues and painted with German camo paint.

These trucks were made for ten years from 1974 to 1984, and were offered with a 3-liter, straight six, Volvo B30 engine good for 130hp in carburetted form and 175hp when equipped with fuel injection.

This one is said to have just under 37,000 km on the clock and is offered for $30,000 in Castle Rock, Colorado.

I posted about a restored Volvo C303 last year that reportedly sold for less than $20k in 2009. From what I’ve seen online, similar trucks are selling in the $20k to $25k range.
