Spotted: Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Turbo-diesel

I just spotted this lovely looking 1991 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado on BaT. It looks like quite a find: 2.5-liter turbo-diesel, automatic transmission, 126k original kms (78.8k miles), fully loaded, aluminum roof rack. OK—it’s right-hand drive, which would take some getting used to. But that classically handsome shape, that great color, it looks really nice.

It’s located in Vancouver, Canada; the asking price is an attractive $9,600; and it’s one year away from legal U.S. import. This is my kind of truck!

Note: the ad states the engine is a 2.0-liter diesel but my research shows that all 1991 Prados were equipped with 2,446 cc diesels.

Spotted: Former Bundeswehr Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen 240GD

This, apparent former Bundeswehr (ex-military), 1986 Mercedes-Benz 240GD just showed up on Bring a Trailer. It’s a 2-door, long wheelbase, open top model that’s been fitted with a rooftop tent, stove and cabinets. It’s said to have heavy-duty axles. Power comes from a 4-cylinder diesel which, if my experience with the 240D is any indication, will make it pretty slow.

The speed, or lack thereof, is one caveat. Registration might be another. The ad states that documents for registration will be included. It doesn’t state that the car is registered. OK—it’s a diesel, and older than 1998, so no California smog test, but it’s still a European import. It’s something to think about. Still it could make a fun overlander.

The car is listed on Craigslist and located in Los Angeles, California with an asking price of $25,000.

Spotted: Imported Toyota Land Cruiser BJ70 Diesel

Land Cruiser BJ70 Diesel, via WCXC

This right-hand drive, 1985 Land Cruiser BJ70 diesel was reportedly imported to the United States last year. The current owners cleaned up some small rust spots and gave the truck a respray. This looks like a nice truck.

According to the ad, the truck runs a 3.4-liter, 3B diesel engine, mated to an H55F, 5-speed transmission, and a 2-speed transfer case. The factory PTO winch with new cable is a bonus. It’s cover about 130k miles (although the speedometer reads in km/h).

This Land Cruiser can be found at Sun Valley Auto Club in Sun Valley, Idaho. The asking price is just a hair under $20k.

Spotted: 1995 Range Rover Classic LWB

I just spotted this 1995 Range Rover Classic LWB for sale on Bring a Trailer. It is said to have been meticulously maintained by a collector-owner and the photos certainly bear that out. You just can’t beat the design of the the Classics. They just look so right, even after twenty years, especially in this color combo of Plymouth Blue paint over tan hides. Power is provided by a 4.2-liter V-8.

Of course, their legendary good looks and off-road prowess are only matched by their legendary need for maintenance. As one commenter on Bring a Trailer put it, “For anyone considering buying this vehicle let me offer you this option. Gather up all of the money you were going to spend (cash only, no checks) and pay me a visit in person. We will split the money 50/50. I will kick you in the crotch as hard as humanly possible and you will go back home both mentally and financially better off.”

Ouch… Still—she’s a beauty, isn’t she? Here are the rest of the details, in case you can’t resist.

The air suspension has been replaced with coil springs and Bilstein shocks. Mileage is 107,000. The truck is available in Woodland Hills, California. Bidding currently stands at $15,200 with no reserve and about 13.5 hours on the ebay auction clock at the time of writing.

Update 02/05/2015: Well, that ended quickly. The ebay ad says the item was pulled because it was no longer available. Surely it was picked up by someone with impeccable taste, balls of steel, and a wallet to match.

Spotted: Ex-military Surplus Hummers

If you’re interested in a used Hummer but don’t want to pay $30k–$70k for a civilian H1 model, a government-issued Humvee could be the way to go. The website GOV Planet currently lists 100+ AM General Humvees to be auctioned off around the country. The opening bid on all of them is $10,000.

In case you’re hazy on the Hummer’s specs, here’s a refresher: 6.2L diesel engine, automatic transmission, 7,700 lbs. GVWR, portal axles, and 37″ tires.

They’re all 20+ years old and do look pretty bare bones. But who needs a fancy leather interior, if you’re just going to be overlanding and camping?

The site does make a point to mention that the trucks are for “Off-road use only,” though the veracity of that claim was debated in the comments of the Reddit post where I found the link. That said, caveat emptor.

Spotted: Fully Restored 1984 Land Rover Series III 109

This fully restored 1984 Land Rover Series III 109 wagon was listed on ebay this summer. I haven’t seen that many long-wheelbase two-doors. The truck looks stunning in grey with cream steel wheels.

Here’s what the ad had to say:

During the process of the restoration the car was fully dismantled and all automobile components, frame, engine, transmission, body details, wiring, brake system and cooling system has been checked and rebuilt.

All components have been cleaned from dust, rust and the old layer of color. After cleaning the metal components were galvanized, covered with powder color or colored. All aluminum body panels were cleared from old color and covered with qualitative primer, which shields it from oxidation.

The floor, the roof, the engine cover and the doors have been lined with sound-proof panels. Individual roof side and floor lining has been set up.

Regulation of valves, carburetor, wheel alignment, brakes, manual brakes and front lamps, as well as tire balancing has been carried out.

A 500km long test ride has been made with the automobile, after the test ride, a technical test has been carried out and regulation was checked no defects were found.

The automobile is in excellent technical and visual condition, it is ready to participate in road traffic or increase a collection.

The asking price was $49,000 and the truck was located in Latvia, in eastern Europe.

Spotted: ’46 Willys CJ-2A

The early Jeep, it’s about as plain as a cardboard box, and about as versatile too. It’s an honest thing—the essence of the 4×4. You can’t distill it down to get anything simpler. And here’s one for sale, a Willys CJ-2A from 1946, the first year of production. It came with a 60 hp, 4-cylinder engine good for 105 lb-ft of torque, a 3-speed transmission, and a 2-speed transfer case.

This one has been treated to a three-year, father-and-son rebuild. The engine was rebuilt as well, but the job was done by a professional. It has a new Solex carburetor, 12V electrics, larger-than-stock rear brake drums. I love the side-mounted spares on these.

This jeep is available for the more-than-reasonable price of $6,000 in northern Idaho.Click through at the end of the post to read the original ad text.

Spotted: 2004 Toyota Tacoma DoubleCab 4×4

This is a nice looking 2004 Toyota Tacoma DoubleCab that the owner reportedly converted to PreRunner 4×4 spec using all Toyota 4WD parts. It has a 2.7-liter, 4-cylinder motor, and an automatic transmission.

The truck has all kinds of overlanding goodies, like an ARB front bumper, an Outdoor Logic rear bumper with swing out, a Safari Snorkel, ARB front and rear locking differentials with 5.29 gearing, a complete OME suspension, and BudBuilt skid plates.

It looks like it’s been set up right. The diff. breathers are said to be routed to under the hood and the effect of the larger 255 BFG Mud Terrains has been corrected by a Dakota Digital speedometer calibrator. I like the little touches like the front-mounted hitch receiver under the license plate and the black Toyota trim.

The truck has 225,000 miles, but on a truck that’s been well maintained, I no longer see that as an issue. Just keep up the maintenance and drive it.

The truck is located in Modesto, California and available for $14,000. As is usually the case, you couldn’t build it for the asking price. See the original ad text at the end of the post.

Spotted: Unimog U1300L

Here’s a Unimog mash-up from ebay (via Bring a Trailer). The truck is described as a U1300L with a U1500 sourced 5.7-liter, turbo-charged, six-cylinder diesel. The ad states 72,302 for the the odometer reading.

If you go for this check it out well, given engine swap. The buy-it-now price is $28,500 and there are just about 3 days left on the ebay clock. The truck is located in Colorado.

Spotted: 1980 Land Cruiser BJ61 Diesel

This 1980 Land Cruiser BJ61 GX looks like it’s powered by anime, Matchbox car memories, and Japanese surfers. While that may be true, it’s also powered by Toyota’s B3 diesel, a 3.4-liter, four-clapper good for 90 hp and 160 lb-ft of torque. That’s not much, honestly. And there’s no turbo to help move things along.

What this old Land Cruiser lacks in power it makes up in cache though. It’s a Japanese-market model with the high-roof option and right-hand drive. It looks a little rough around the edges but it also looks like no other 60-series I’ve ever seen.

The seller states that import documents are included, with which you can import the truck to any state but California. If you want to bring it to California, it sounds like you’ll need to register it in another state first. Inquire with the seller, if that’s your plan.

Other things to know? It has a 5-speed manual (H55F) transmission and two-speed transfer case. The ad lists the build year as 1980 and 1986. I think the former is correct since the truck doesn’t have a 17-digit VIN, something manufacturers started including for the 1981 model year. Plus it just looks so 1980.

The truck has 157,5xx kms showing on the odometer (yup, it reads in kilometers). Bidding stands at $8,900 at the time of writing with about two days left on the auction clock. The truck is located in Los Angeles.
