Milspec Mercedes / Puch GE230 • WCXC

This matte-black, milspec G-wagen, a 1990 Mercedes-Benz/Puch 230GE, is the the upmarket G500’s bare-bones, older cousin. While locking front, rear, and center differentials, and legendary off-road capabilities, are baked into the G-wagen DNA, you’ll have do without the brawny V8, and front-and-rear heated, leather seats in this version.

Power, in this case, comes from a 2.3-liter, 4-cylinder, gasoline engine good for 125 hp and 141 lb-ft of torque. Whether that’s enough to motivate a long wheelbase (LWB) G-wagen, you’ll have to determine with a test drive. Out back it’s configured as a soft-top with seating for six, most likely via two, long, folding, bench seats (in addition to the two seats in the front, of course). The transmission is a 4-speed manual.

Mileage is listed as 69,300 km, but, if the odometer has only five digits, look carefully around the truck for wear to make sure the odo. hasn’t been rolled over. One good place to check are the rubber pads on the foot pedals. On a high-mileage car, they’ll be quite worn. Also make sure the odometer is running consistently and doesn’t cut out after five miles or so.

It’s listed at CN$26,500, which is a significantly higher price than I’ve seen elsewhere online (check the links below). If it’s a nice example though, you’ll surely be able to negotiate.

The truck is located in Vancouver, Canada, and is one year away from legal import status to the US (the 25-year rule).

Special thanks to WCXC reader Clay R. for spotting this one for us.

Here’s an interesting find: a right-hand drive, short wheel base, 70-series, diesel Land Cruiser. Specifically, this is a 1988 BJ74 LX with a 3.4-liter, 13B-T (T for turbo) diesel engine and an automatic transmission. The 13B-T is good for 120 hp and 159 lb-ft of torque. Other highlights include a removable fiberglass top, a factory PTO winch, and a hand throttle (handy for operating the PTO).

This truck also sports a Safari Snorkel and a K&N filter. If you’re interested, double check that pairing. As far as I know, it’s one that Safari doesn’t recommend. The suspension is said to be an Old Man Emu system with a bit of lift. The BJ series was never sold new in North America, making this a relatively rare find, especially with the factory PTO setup.

While this Land Cruiser doesn’t look pristine — and the chrome bull bar is bit much for my taste — it does look presentable and clean underneath. The truck is located in Seattle, Washington, and is said to have 178k miles on the clock. $13,750 is the asking price. See the links for the original ad and some research reading.

Special thanks to our friend Josh in Portland for spotting this one.

There’s a very nicely built FJ60 Land Cruiser for sale in Los Angeles right now. This one has ditched the inline six in favor of a CARB-legal, Chevy 350 V-8 crate motor. The suspension has been upgraded as well to Fox 2.0 reservoir shocks. Other highlights: on-board air with a 2.5-gallon accumulator tank, dual batteries, rear diff. lock. The list goes on.

This FJ60 has 320k miles on the body, 20k on the motor and drivetrain. It’s located in Claremont, California, and is being offered for $21,000.

This 1971 International Harvester Scout 800 is described on ebay as a newly built, running, drivable project vehicle. It’s powered by a Ford 302 V-8 that runs through a 4-speed, manual transmission. From there the power is fed into Dana 44 axles. A new Holley carburetor can be found atop the 302. Up front there’s a working Ramsey PTO winch.

The truck wears new paint and a custom rollcage and hood. A top is available. The seller states that there isn’t much in the way of an exhaust so it’s loud. With an unmuffled V-8 that might be an understatement.

This truck is located in Chewelah, Washington. There are about 5 days left on the clock and bidding currently stands at $5,005 with an unmet reserve.

This very nice looking, red, 1952 Willys CJ3A is currently being offered on Craigslist. It was reportedly treated to a frame-off restoration in 2004, at which time it received a new tub, wiring harness, and a professional respray.

It’s also said to have new tires and a working, PTO-driven, Ramsey winch, and separate capstan, at the rear end. Quite a unique feature, in my opinion.

The ad states that the odometer reads 21,500 and that the Jeep is located in Novato, California (about an hour north of San Francisco). This asking price is a not-unreasonable $14,000, though the owner states that he’s open to offers.

How cool would it be to explore the Sierras, open-air-style, in this thing?

1966 Ford Bronco • WCXC

We spotted this stock 1966 Ford Bronco on the way home from a hike the other day. The Craigslist ad states that the truck wears new paint, has a new exhaust, a recently swapped engine (now a 302), a James Duff 3-speed transmission, and transfer case shifter upgrade.

The truck is located in Sonoma County with a $17,500 asking price. I took some photos. See them after the jump.

There’s only one day left on this Mat Tracks-equipped Pinzgauer 710M. The seller states the Mat Tracks alone are a $35,000 upgrade. The tracks would make this truck unstoppable in deep snow. The original wheels and tires are said to be included. Paint is also said to be new. Mileage: 50,000 (km, I’m assuming).

The truck is listed on ebay with a Buy-it-now price of $27,500, and is located in Marathon, Florida.

I just spotted this VW Type 2 T3 Syncro DoKa via Expedition Portal. The ad states that it started life with a 1.9-liter gas engine and was “properly” converted from 2wd to 4wd. The engine is currently out of the truck and the seller is offering buyers a couple of different powertrain options: a 1.6-liter JX  gas engine or a 1.9-liter AAZ turbo-diesel with a Giles injection pump, K14 turbocharger, and ARP engine fasteners. Also offered, is a locking front differential in addition to the locking rear. The truck has also been treated to a full repaint and a new suspension. It’s reported to have covered only 80,000 km.

I love these drop-side transporters. This is a 3-door DoKa model. No build year is given but the seller states that it’s over 25 years old (making US import unproblematic). This mostly likely means it’s a 1985 model, which was the first year of the Syncro and the last year of the 1.9-liter engine, according to my research.

A lot of these trucks led hard lives. It’s nice to see one in such good condition.

The truck is being offered in Bright’s Grove, Ontario, Canada for $18,500 as is, $25,000 with the 1.6-liter JX and lockers, or $30,000 with the 1.9 diesel.

If you’re in the market for an amphibious, 6×6 off-roader, have a look at this mid-60s Alvis Stalwart. It features a 220-hp straight-eight Rolls-Royce engine, a 25,000-lb. winch, and a 12,000-lb. boom in the bed.

A few caveats before you grab your checkbook: The only way to get into this thing is through the hatches on the roof. It’s lack of a center differential means you can’t drive it on the road without destroying the transmission. And, of course, it’s British, so watch the electrics.

Another note of caution: some of these trucks had all of their swim gear removed in the 80s, while still in military service. Finding parts to rebuild those systems… let’s just say that Alvis never had much of a US dealer network.

That said, if you want a truly go-anywhere vehicle, and have the technical and financial resources to keep this 50-year-old beast running, it could be the vehicle for you.

This Alvis Stalwart is located in Puyallup, Washington, near Seattle, with an $8500 asking price.

I’ve always liked the 80s-era Audi 4000. To my eye they look better than the 5000, cleaner, more compact.

Here’s an 1985 Audi 4000S (spotted on Bring a Trailer) with only 112k miles, a 5-speed gearbox, a sun roof, and, of course, Quattro all-wheel drive. This model was equipped with an inline, 5-cylinder engine rated at a modest 115 hp and 126 ft. lbs of torque. That’s good for a 9.5-second 0–60 time. People say they’re quiet fun to drive though.

This car is reportedly owned by a German-car-repair-shop owner in Denver and is said to have been completely mechanically sorted out.

A note on this model’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system: all four wheels are permanently engaged through three open differentials. The center and rear diffs. are lockable via levers on the dashboard.

Bidding currently stands at $7,500 with 24 bids and three days left on the clock.

Update 12/18/2013:
Bidding on this Audi just ended at $12,655 with 36 bids.
