Reader Rides: Portland Urban Safari

For some reason Portland still has dirt roads within its city limits. Some of them are actually drivable only by 4-wheel-drive vehicles. So someone had the brilliant idea to get a bunch of overlanders together and drive them. The resulting event is called the Portland Urban Safari. They have fun with it. People get dressed up in safari gear. They had Camel Trophy-style number plates made. One team put an inflatable tiger in the bed of their Syncro.

Portland is currently discussing what to do about its unpaved roads. How great to have an urban venue in which to showcase overlanding though. I hope they leave them as is.

Houses for the Urban Bird

If you’re an urban bird that likes to travel, you’ll love these. They were created by San Francisco artists Luke Bartels and Jeff Canham (see the whole set at this link).

$1 Million in Twelve Minutes

If, like me, you’re inexplicably fascinated by construction sites but don’t have the time or the wherewithal to spend all day watching them, you’ll enjoy this.

I recently came across this time-lapse film of the corner of 30th and Church in San Francisco where, in mid-October of this year, MUNI replaced some tracks. This amazing video handily compresses three-and-half days (and about a million dollars’ worth) of ’round-the-clock construction into about twelve readily-watchable minutes. Consider it armchair travel.
